Torchwood – Children of Earth

I’ve been remiss in not giving my thoughts about this earlier but honestly? it took me a full week to recover from the sheer, emotional devastation and another to stop ranting about Russell T. Davies, the creator/writer/evil one.

I’m sure those who watch the show have already seen this, but just in case…

okay first, let me say that as a writer, I am in awe of RTD’s sheer titanium steel balls. seriously. this is a man who has decimated his entire show in the name of what he considers drama and good television/storytelling. out of the original characters, Tosh, Jack, Ianto, Susie, Gwen, Owen, only two are left, Jack and Gwen, and Jack took off into space to get away from his grief. that leaves, oh, Gwen. and the others weren’t reassigned, they are d-e-a-d and not comin’ back. RTD is apparently thrilled to pieces about what he’s done and not looking back.

as a fan, I hate what RTD did with a passion. he took a wonderful, exciting, passionate, witty, smart show and leveled it with an atomic bomb. the acting/writing/directing were all phenomenal, I’m not arguing that, I’m saying Ianto’s death was completely unnecessary. given that Jack had to sacrifice the life of his grandson to save the children of earth, well, I’d say that was plenty of drama and then some.

(and that’s not even bringing up the fact that he killed off half of a positive, loving gay couple, the only one in scifi that I know of, one of the few on tv at all, altho I hate that, too)

okay, all the writer and fannish stuff is out of the way.

loved all the parts about Ianto’s and Jack’s families, Gwen being preggers, how Rhys finds out, PC Andy!! he’s too adorable. Johnson was a tough cookie and so awesome. Lois (the new Ianto I’m assuming) was also lovely in a innocent way.

really, the only thing I didn’t like, was RTD killing off Ianto. everything else was just perfect. the build up of angst, the light touches of humor, and action/fast pace, it all rolled together with a smoothness I’ve rarely seen, especially considering that it took place as a 5 day mini-series.

here’s my predictions:

1. Torchwood will be back as another mini-series in 2 years, which BBC’s already said they’re amenable to given the numbers for COE.

2. Jack will return from space to stop some other crisis that torchwood can’t handle in his absence. Johnson and Lois and PC Andy will have joined torchwood, also in his absence, as well as Mickey Smith (altho he’s a little iffy).

3. Gwen is the new Jack, that’s an easy one since she took over for him once before, but she runs things from the rebuilt Hub.

4. it’s probable that Jack’s ex, Captain John Hart, will play a significant role

and those are my children of earth thoughts. I haven’t decided whether or not I’ll get the dvds, altho it’s more than likely I will if only for the extras. what can I say? I’m a sucker for my fave actors.
